When the weather warms up, the flies show up.
And if you own horses, you know how frustrating that can be — stomping, tail swishing, irritated eyes, stressed horses.
Over the years, I’ve found a few simple fly control essentials that actually make a difference in the barn and pasture.
Here’s what I use every spring and summer.

🪰 1. Fly Spray (Daily Essential)
Search on Amazon:
- “horse fly spray permethrin”
- “natural horse fly spray essential oils”
- “ultra shield ex fly spray”
A good fly spray is your first line of defense. I like to keep you in the tack room and one by the gate so it’s easy to grab before turnout or riding.
🐴 2. Fly Masks
Search:
- “horse fly mask with ears”
- “horse fly mask UV protection”
- “durable horse fly mask”
Fly masks protect sensitive eyes and help reduce stress from constant irritation. I prefer one with soft edges and good airflow.
🪤 3. Fly Traps (For Barn Area)
Search:
- “rescue reusable fly trap”
- “outdoor fly trap bag”
- “barn fly trap refill”
These help reduce the overall fly population around the barn. Hang them away from stalls but close enough to draw flies away.
🧂 4. Feed-Through Fly Control
Search:
- “feed through fly control for horses”
- “horse fly supplement pellets”
This works from the inside out and can dramatically reduce flies around manure areas. The Fly Predators are also a very effective way to manage the flies. Introduce these gnats that will feed on the fly larvae!
🌬 5. Fans for Airflow
Search:
- “barn fan wall mount”
- “heavy duty shop fan”
- “weather resistant barn fan”
Airflow alone can reduce flies significantly. Plus, your horses stay cooler in the summer heat.
Spring and Summer don’t have to be feared because of the dreaded flies. Use these tried and true strategies to create a barn and field your horses can enjoy this summer!
